Lamborghini Shifts Gears: Hybrids Over EVs as Noise is Missed
22 Feb
Summary
- Lamborghini abandons all-electric plans for plug-in hybrids.
- EV demand is low among clients who miss internal combustion engine noise.
- Hybrid models like Revuelto and Urus are driving sales success.

Lamborghini has announced a significant shift in its electrification strategy, moving away from an all-electric future towards a focus on plug-in hybrid vehicles. This decision stems from a noted decline in demand for fully electric cars among its affluent customer base, many of whom apparently miss the characteristic sound of internal combustion engines. The company's CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, expressed that pursuing full EV development without customer readiness would be financially irresponsible.
Consequently, Lamborghini's initial plans for an all-electric concept, the Lanzador, have been shelved. This model will be replaced by a plug-in hybrid variant, aligning with the brand's commitment to offer only plug-in hybrids by 2030. In the interim, Lamborghini will continue manufacturing vehicles with combustion engines for as long as market conditions permit.
The success of Lamborghini's current hybridisation strategy is already evident, with sales of models such as the Revuelto and the Urus plug-in hybrid SUV significantly boosting the company's financial results. The hybrid Temerario has also joined the lineup. These hybrid models are reportedly met with enthusiasm by customers globally, driving record deliveries worldwide in 2025.
