2 Oct
Summary
- LA County sales tax increased to 10.25% today.
- Measure ER will fund healthcare and essential services.
- The tax increase is expected to generate $1 billion annually.
Effective today, the sales tax in Los Angeles County has increased by a half-cent, bringing the total rate to 10.25%. This change is due to voter-approved Measure ER, which will remain in effect for five years, concluding in 2031. The measure is projected to generate about $1 billion each year.
The revenue generated by Measure ER is designated to support healthcare and other critical services across the county. Supervisors Holly Mitchell and Hilda Solis introduced the bill to offset funding losses impacting the county's healthcare system, particularly due to federal changes in Medi-Cal. Supporters emphasized the necessity of this $5 billion in funding to safeguard essential services.
However, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association had opposed Measure ER, citing already high sales tax rates in the county. This is the second sales tax increase in Los Angeles County recently, following Measure A in 2024 for homeless services. Some city rates within the county exceed 11%, with Lancaster and Palmdale reaching 11.75%.
