The line, which begins at Dhansiri and extends to Zubza near Kohima, is considered a project of national importance.
Construction has advanced significantly, with four of the eight planned stations and seven of the twenty planned tunnels already finished. Over 180 bridges are part of the project, with many already completed. Passenger services commenced at Shokhuvi in 2022, and cargo operations are slated for Molvom in September 2025, marking key operational milestones.
Upon completion, the railway line will bolster connectivity between Nagaland, northeastern states, and the rest of India. It will offer a more convenient, affordable, and time-efficient travel alternative to road transport, supporting economic growth by creating jobs and boosting local businesses.
