Kochi Tea Market Booms Amid Holiday Cheer
19 Dec
Summary
- Buoyant tea sales in Kochi driven by upcoming Christmas holidays.
- CTC dust tea prices rose ₹3-₹4, with medium teas up ₹5-₹10.
- Average price realization increased by ₹3 to ₹167 per kg.

The Kochi tea auction market reported buoyant sales leading up to Christmas holidays, with 96% of the offered 6,94,660 kg of CTC dust finding buyers. Good liquoring teas saw prices firm by ₹3 to ₹4, while medium teas appreciated by ₹5 to ₹10. Major blenders absorbed a significant 68% of the CTC quantity, contributing to an average price realization of ₹167 per kg, a ₹3 increase from the prior week.
The orthodox dust market, however, was irregular, with a smaller quantity offered and a portion withdrawn. In contrast, the orthodox leaf category witnessed strong demand, particularly from exporters to CIS and Middle Eastern countries. With 89% of the 2,82,258 kg offered sold, the average price realization rose by ₹2 to ₹176 per kg.
Market sentiment was strengthened by several factors including strong seasonal demand from Sabarimala and Christmas festivities, reduced future offerings, lower crop arrivals in November-December, and the dropping of Sale 52. This quality-driven demand confirmed a market recovery, benefiting producers who maintain consistent quality and processing discipline.
