8 Jun
Summary
- Goal to shift 50% cargo transport from roads to sea routes.
- Ports integration to drive growth and create lakhs of jobs.
- Focus on cruise shipping, tourism, and sustainable ocean economy.

Kerala is embarking on a strategic initiative to transform into a significant maritime hub, integrating its extensive port network and aiming to redirect at least half of its current road-based cargo movement to sea routes. This long-term vision, articulated by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, positions the ocean economy as a critical engine for the state's growth, employment generation, and sustainable development.
The state boasts a substantial coastline of nearly 600km, complemented by two international ports, a container terminal, and seventeen intermediate ports, highlighting its potential as a major maritime gateway. Future phases of this development will concentrate on expanding cruise shipping and developing tourism ventures connected to inland waterways, promising substantial job creation and new economic avenues.
Recognizing the global importance of oceans for climate regulation, biodiversity, and food security, Kerala aims to leverage emerging opportunities in green ports, smart shipping, and marine biotechnology. Assets like the Vizhinjam International Seaport and Cochin Port are central to this strategy, with Vizhinjam poised to become a model for sustainable port development in South Asia. The initiative also addresses critical environmental challenges such as marine pollution and climate change, essential for responsible maritime governance.
