Kerala Cabs Strike: Commuters Stranded!

Major cities in Kerala, such as Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode, experienced significant transportation problems on Wednesday. This was a direct result of an indefinite statewide strike initiated by online taxi operators on Tuesday. The All-Kerala Online Drivers Union Alliance organized the action, which led to approximately 80% of app-based cabs staying off the roads.

Passengers were left stranded as ride-hailing platforms like Uber, Ola, Rapido, and the state-backed Kerala Savari saw dynamic pricing take effect due to high demand. In Ernakulam, standard cab fares saw a drastic increase during peak hours. For instance, a trip that usually costs between Rs 200 and Rs 250 escalated to nearly Rs 800. Commuters also contended with extended waiting periods and frequent ride cancellations.

A potential resolution emerged on Wednesday as cab aggregators agreed to discuss the drivers' grievances. Following a protest march to Uber's Kochi office, representatives from Uber, Rapido, and Kerala Savari consented to negotiations. While the physical protest march was called off based on these assurances, union leaders indicated the digital strike would persist until written guarantees regarding fair fare revisions and commission caps are provided.

The drivers' primary demand centers on a uniform hiring rate and an increase in the rates offered by platforms to ensure decent wages, as many drivers earn meager amounts despite long working hours. They aim to cap platform commissions, which they claim exceed 50% of earnings, and are pushing for a minimum hire charge of Rs 200, along with enhanced job security and clearer regulations for bike taxis.
