JNPA Stranded Containers Plummet Amidst Geopolitical Tensions

The number of stranded containers at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has experienced a substantial decrease, as reported on March 8. Authorities implemented new procedures and enhanced coordination with exporters and shipping companies to address trade disruptions stemming from Middle East geopolitical situations.
Between March 1 and March 8, stranded containers at JNPA reduced from approximately 5,000 TEUs to about 3,200 TEUs. Similarly, stranded perishable containers saw a sharp decline from around 2,000 to approximately 1,000 TEUs.
These improvements follow the issuance of a standard operating procedure (SOP) by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. JNPA established a dedicated task force, with Shri Girish Thomas as the single point of contact, to facilitate trade and manage operational concerns.
JNPA has introduced several measures to support exporters and alleviate port congestion. These include temporary transshipment storage for Middle East-bound cargo, additional storage space, and facilitation of ad-hoc vessel calls. Perishable cargo and returning export containers are being prioritized, alongside accelerated 'Back to Town' (BTT) movements.
Customs authorities have also introduced a key facilitation measure allowing BTT movement of export cargo even without the Export General Manifest (EGM) filing, waiving related fees and penalties after basic verification. Adequate trailers are available for efficient container evacuation, ensuring smooth movement of perishable goods.
JNPA Chairperson Shri Gaurav Dayal emphasized the port's commitment to supporting the EXIM community and minimizing disruptions through continuous consultation and practical solutions. The reduction in stranded containers is seen as a positive outcome of coordinated efforts among port authorities, stakeholders, and trade bodies.
