JLR Battery Factory Faces Major Construction Delays
20 Jun
Summary
- Agratas sacked its main contractor, SRM, over budget issues.
- Project cost may exceed budget by at least £500m.
- Delays risk impacting Jaguar Land Rover's electric model launch.

The construction of the Agratas gigafactory, a crucial UK government-backed project for Jaguar Land Rover's electric vehicle transition, is facing significant delays. Agratas has terminated its primary construction contractor, Sir Robert McAlpine (SRM), replacing them with Tonroe Group Ltd (TSL). This move comes amid a substantial budget overrun, with costs expected to exceed the initial £800m by at least £500m. SRM was reportedly working under a temporary arrangement for over two years without a formal contract.
These construction challenges pose a risk to the planned start date, which has already been pushed back multiple times, with the current internal target of January 2028 now looking unlikely. The delays could severely impact JLR's ability to launch its new electric models and meet UK's electric car sales mandates, potentially exposing the company to fines. High staff turnover within Agratas's UK operations further compounds the project's issues.
While Agratas stated a "different construction delivery model is needed," and SRM indicated a "mutual agreement" to part ways, the departures create uncertainty. TSL, the new contractor, faces the complex task of building advanced facilities, including handling dangerous electrolytes and constructing one of Europe's largest clean rooms. The project also faces procurement delays for essential components like substation equipment, with lead times of up to two years.
