28 May
Summary
- Founder promises no front-line worker will be fired due to automation.
- JD.com employs 900,000 staff, including blue-collar workers.
- Company trains workers for maintenance of automated systems.

JD.com founder Liu Qiangdong has assured the company's 900,000 employees that automation will not lead to job losses for front-line staff. In a recent internal address, Liu stated that JD.com would make every effort to safeguard employment, particularly for blue-collar workers, amidst growing concerns about AI and robotics replacing jobs.
The e-commerce giant is actively experimenting with unmanned technologies like drone delivery and self-driving vehicles. To manage the transition, JD.com has established over 80 training bases nationwide. These facilities focus on reskilling employees, teaching them maintenance and servicing for the automated systems being implemented.
These commitments align with recent legal precedents in China, where courts have ruled against terminating employees solely for AI replacement. Chinese authorities also mandated worker retraining or reassignment before termination, establishing an early safeguard against AI-induced job displacement.
