19 Sep
Summary
- Jazz Pharmaceuticals acquired Actio Biosciences for $820 million.
- The deal includes a potential first-in-class treatment for KCNT1-related epilepsy.
- The drug, ABS-1230, has shown encouraging early results in reducing seizures.

Jazz Pharmaceuticals announced on September 15, 2026, the completion of its acquisition of Actio Biosciences for an upfront payment of $820 million. This strategic move grants Jazz control over ABS-1230, an experimental oral drug targeting KCNT1-related epilepsy, a severe genetic disorder affecting around 2,500 individuals in the U.S.
KCNT1-related epilepsy often manifests in infancy, causing numerous daily seizures for which existing treatments offer minimal relief. ABS-1230, Actio's drug candidate, has demonstrated encouraging early clinical results, with patients experiencing significant reductions in seizures. The drug has already garnered FDA designations including Fast Track, Rare Pediatric Disease, and Orphan Drug.
Jazz aims to leverage this acquisition to expand its presence in the rare epilepsy market, building on the success of its existing drug, Epidiolex. The company anticipates that its ongoing Phase 1b/2a study for ABS-1230 could potentially serve as a registrational trial, accelerating the path to market. Additional milestone payments of up to $500 million are contingent on the drug's approval and sales performance.
