Japan Auto Giants Unite Against China's Rise
16 Jul
Summary
- Japanese automakers urged to collaborate on cost reduction.
- Standardizing parts like wire harnesses can boost productivity.
- Japan seeks to avoid a European-style auto crisis.

Koji Sato, leading the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), has called for increased cooperation among Japan's major carmakers to counter the growing influence of Chinese automakers. Sato emphasized that pooling resources can significantly lower costs and boost efficiency, crucial for sustainable growth in the rapidly evolving automotive market.
The proposed strategy focuses on standardizing common components, such as specific plastics, steel grades, and wire harnesses. This initiative aims to streamline the complex supply chain, which currently demands around 70,000 different wire harness specifications. By standardizing these parts, Japanese manufacturers can potentially achieve a tenfold increase in productivity.
This move is seen as vital for Japanese automakers like Toyota and Honda to maintain their global competitiveness. The aim is to create "areas of cooperation" to enhance efficiency, allowing companies to concentrate their competitive efforts on innovation in batteries and software, thereby avoiding a market crisis similar to what some European car manufacturers are experiencing due to increased competition.
