Japan Urges Australia to Boost LNG Output Amid Crisis
14 Mar
Summary
- Japan seeks increased LNG supply from Australia due to Middle East crisis.
- Middle East disruption impacts global LNG supply, affecting Japan's security.
- Australia's Scarborough and Barossa fields to increase gas production soon.

Japan's industry minister, Ryosei Akazawa, formally requested Australia to ramp up its liquefied natural gas (LNG) production during a bilateral meeting on March 14, 2026. This plea comes in response to the severe disruptions in energy supplies stemming from the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict in the Middle East. Japan is particularly vulnerable, sourcing a significant portion of its LNG and crude oil from this volatile region, with critical shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz impacted. The conflict has already led to a substantial portion of global LNG supply being taken offline, with recovery expected to take months. Akazawa emphasized Australia's role as a vital partner for Japan's energy security, highlighting the importance of stable LNG imports. Australian Resources Minister Madeleine King affirmed Australia's commitment as a trusted supplier and noted that upcoming production from the Scarborough and Barossa fields would significantly boost the nation's LNG exports, contributing to regional stability. The discussions occurred during the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Ministerial and Business Forum in Tokyo.
