Summary
- Janus Electric converts diesel trucks to electric powertrains.
- Electric truck upgrades cost same as diesel engine rebuild.
- Battery swaps take four minutes, offering 450km range.

Janus Electric, led by CEO Ben Hutt, is at the forefront of converting diesel trucks to complete electric systems and batteries. The company's process offers a significant environmental benefit and is often more economical than traditional diesel. Established by Lex Forsyth, whose family has a century-long history in Australian trucking, Janus Electric began commercial conversions three years ago.
Currently in a scaling-up phase, Janus Electric has 28 pilot trucks operational across Australia in various freight sectors. These pilots demonstrated substantial financial advantages for companies transitioning from diesel. Hutt likens the company's position to Tesla's early passenger electric vehicle adoption, marking the beginning of widespread heavy electric truck acceptance.
The cost-effective upgrade is comparable to rebuilding a diesel engine, with batteries offered as a service. Conversions take four to six days, supported by dealer partners in South Australia, Western Australia, California, and Canada. Battery swaps are completed in a rapid four minutes, providing approximately 450 kilometers of range for a 70-ton gross vehicle mass, sufficient for most Australian trucking needs.
Janus Electric is expanding into North America, a market with over 4 million heavy trucks, with 120 trucks already ordered from California and Canada. The company also plans to significantly expand its battery swapping infrastructure, aiming for 50 more stations in the next 12 months, in addition to the 11 already operating. The company emphasizes the recyclability and commonality of battery recycling processes, countering common criticisms.
CEO Ben Hutt acknowledges the challenges and the long development cycles for electric trucks, referencing Tesla's experience. He points out that while new electric trucks are entering the market, Janus Electric focuses on retrofitting existing diesel trucks, addressing the vast number of diesel vehicles with embedded carbon. The company advocates for policy changes to support this transition, arguing it will positively impact inflation and fuel security.
