Jamaica's tourism sector has surpassed recovery expectations following Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm. By December 19, 2025, the nation had welcomed 300,000 visitors, with major resort areas like Montego Bay and Ocho Rios fully operational. Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett confirmed that recovery targets were met by December 15, a testament to a rapid recovery strategy.
The swift resumption of tourism is vital, as the industry contributes over 30 percent to Jamaica's GDP and supports approximately one-third of the island's workforce. Between December 11 and 14 alone, 20,800 tourists arrived, showcasing strong recovery momentum.
Infrastructure recovery has also advanced rapidly. All major airports, including Sangster International, are operating normally, and major airlines continue regular service. By the end of December 2025, an estimated 71 percent of hotels are expected to reopen, with more anticipated in early 2026.
