Jaipur Power Shift: Zonal Engineers Gain Authority
13 Dec
Summary
- Jaipur Municipal Corporation redistributes key powers from headquarters to zonal offices.
- Executive engineer post at headquarters sees significant reduction in responsibilities.
- Zonal offices now oversee public toilets, shelter homes, and road naming.

The Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) has initiated a notable restructuring by reassigning significant powers from its central headquarters to executive engineers in zonal offices. This strategic redistribution is poised to dilute the historically concentrated influence of the headquarters-based executive engineer, a position often subject to intense lobbying.
Previously, the executive engineer at headquarters was responsible for approximately 15 major civic functions. Under the new directives, responsibilities like the construction and maintenance of public toilets, managing shelter homes, overseeing the Shri Annapurna Rasoi scheme, and litter bin installations will transition to zonal control.
Furthermore, zonal offices will now handle the development and upkeep of cremation grounds and graveyards, along with decisions on signage and the naming of major roads and intersections. Only matters concerning the installation of statues will remain under the purview of the headquarters, marking a substantial shift in administrative authority within the JMC.
