Iraq Oil Blocked: Strait of Hormuz Crisis

Iraq's oil production has now surpassed three million barrels per day, but the nation faces significant challenges in exporting its crude. Restrictions at the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit point, have severely limited the capacity of Iraq's southern export terminals, which can currently only handle approximately 2.2 million barrels per day.

This bottleneck means a substantial volume of Iraq's production is stranded, prompting Baghdad to explore alternative shipping solutions. These include efforts to enhance its northern export route via Turkey through an extended pipeline agreement and securing limited passage for some oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz with Iran's recent authorization.

The ongoing disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz continue to influence global oil markets, contributing to concerns about supply tightness. While Iraq aims to significantly increase its production capacity in the coming years, the development of export infrastructure remains crucial to realize this growth and avoid future constraints.
