Iraq Halts Oil Exports Amid Iran Crisis, Storage Full
4 Mar
Summary
- Iraq's oil production cut by nearly 1.5 million barrels daily.
- Storage at southern ports is critical due to export disruptions.
- Potential for production cuts to exceed 3 million bpd.

Iraq has implemented substantial oil production cuts, reducing output by nearly 1.5 million barrels per day, with the possibility of further cuts exceeding 3 million barrels daily. These drastic measures are a direct consequence of export disruptions caused by the Iran crisis, leading to critically full storage levels at the country's southern ports. Production from major fields like Rumaila, West Qurna 2, and Maysan has been significantly curtailed.
If oil tankers cannot freely navigate the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy artery, Iraq's export capabilities will be further compromised. This situation, stemming from hostilities in the Gulf, has already halted energy exports from the region. Despite the reduction in crude oil production, Iraq's Ministry of Oil has stated that its refinery operations will continue unaffected, maintaining a refining capacity of approximately 1.1 million barrels per day.
