Work is commencing this month on a major improvement scheme for Arras Square in Ipswich, with the project slated to begin on June 22. Ipswich Borough Council has outlined a four-phase plan designed to enhance the public space, with completion anticipated by the end of the year.
The refurbishment will introduce several new features, including upgraded paving, a dedicated disabled access ramp, additional bins, and modern CCTV and lighting systems. New seating will be installed, alongside replacement trees, aiming to create a more inviting atmosphere.
Furthermore, St Stephen's Lane will see the installation of removable demountable bollards. A key element of the scheme is a new mural intended to celebrate Ipswich's historic twinning relationship with Arras in France. Council leader Neil MacDonald stated the project will transform the area into a more welcoming and pedestrian-friendly space while honouring the town's heritage.
