Governor Kim Reynolds has signed an executive order to establish the Iowa Office of Outdoor Recreation, a new state government body. The office will focus on promoting and expanding opportunities across the state.
The new office will play a role in financing outdoor recreation projects through a combination of private funding and matching state funds. Furthermore, it will be responsible for marketing Iowa's natural attractions and recreational events to both residents and national audiences.
Governor Reynolds highlighted the substantial economic contributions of outdoor recreation, noting its addition of nearly $6 billion to Iowa's GDP annually and its support for approximately 50,000 jobs. A 10-person task force, comprised of industry stakeholders, will also be formed to advise the new office.
Additionally, the Iowa Parks Passport program for 2026 has been launched. This mobile app encourages Iowans to log visits to state parks for a chance to win prizes, promoting engagement with the state's natural resources.
