Inflation Surges: Policy Rate Hike Looms
14 Sep
Summary
- Retail and wholesale inflation climbed in August.
- Policy interest rate hike possibility strengthens.
- Food and fuel prices significantly impacted inflation.

Government reports indicate that inflation rates in August saw a further increase, with retail inflation reaching 4.8% and wholesale inflation climbing to 9.9%. This upward trend has intensified expectations of a policy interest rate hike by the Monetary Policy Committee in the upcoming month.
Retail inflation, at its highest in the current series, was driven by rising costs in clothing, household goods, education, and food-serving services. Food inflation specifically rose to 5.95% due to weak monsoon showers affecting staples like ginger, onion, and garlic. Transport inflation also accelerated.
Wholesale inflation was primarily influenced by mineral oils, food articles, manufactured food products, basic metals, and chemical products. The fuel and power basket saw a significant increase in inflation. Analysts predict wholesale inflation may reach double digits in September, with continued upward pressure expected due to global uncertainties and currency depreciation.
The Monetary Policy Committee has previously kept key rates unchanged, with a mandate to maintain inflation between 2% and 6%. The current inflationary pressures, exacerbated by global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical events, pose a challenge to this objective.
