IndiGo, India's largest domestic carrier, is embarking on a significant transformation to become a global airline. The strategy involves utilizing hubs within India to connect Indian travelers to international destinations, aiming to repatriate economic wealth currently benefiting foreign airlines. This move marks a new chapter after two decades of domestic focus.
The airline has initiated international operations since 2011 and currently holds a 20% share of international traffic from India. While it currently relies on codeshare partnerships for long-haul connectivity, future plans include launching its own services to Europe and North America.
To support this expansion, IndiGo has placed substantial orders for new aircraft, with deliveries scheduled between 2030 and 2035. This will bolster its fleet for future long-haul routes and potentially enable third-country transit via India.
Beyond aviation, IndiGo's parent company, InterGlobe, plans to list its hospitality business within the next two years. Additionally, its BluChip loyalty program, boasting over 10 million members, is being developed as a standalone business.
