IndiGo Prepares for Global Reach with A350 Jets

IndiGo has placed firm orders for 60 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, with deliveries commencing next year, signaling a major push into international markets. CEO William 'Willie' Walsh views the A350's introduction as pivotal for the airline's profitable expansion over the next five years.

The airline aims to capture a larger share of international traffic and position India as a global aviation hub. Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta noted the underserved 'massive long-haul' market, emphasizing the need for Indian carriers to compete with foreign airlines.

The A350-900, capable of carrying 300-350 passengers over 8,500 nautical miles, will enable non-stop flights to North America, Australia, and major European hubs. IndiGo expects international flights to grow from approximately 30% to 40% of its total capacity by FY30.

This ambitious strategy follows a reset in IndiGo's long-haul approach, including discontinuing its Boeing 787-9 operations and damp-lease agreements. The airline is focused on profitable network development while maintaining its cost leadership.
