India's Oil Costs Surge Amid Tightening Gulf Supplies
19 Aug
Summary
- Indian refiners face higher crude oil costs due to tight Gulf supplies.
- Premiums for Gulf and West African crude oil have significantly increased.
- Discounts on Russian and Venezuelan oil have vanished or narrowed sharply.

The cost of crude oil for Indian refiners is escalating faster than global benchmarks. This surge is attributed to tightening physical supplies from the Gulf, which are commanding higher premiums. Premiums for West African crude have also widened, making these sources increasingly unviable for Indian procurement.
Refiners are now turning to more distant suppliers like the US, Brazil, and Guyana to compensate for the reduced availability of Gulf crude. Meanwhile, the favorable discounts previously enjoyed on Russian and Venezuelan oil have vanished, significantly increasing the overall cost of imported oil.
Supply chain disruptions, including those in the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz, are forcing traders to take on greater risks. These risks are passed on as higher premiums, especially for Gulf crude, as fewer vessels are willing to traverse conflict zones. This trend contrasts sharply with earlier in July when ample supplies eased concerns.
