India's Green Power Surge: Solar, Wind Capacity to Skyrocket
19 Mar
Summary
- India's solar capacity to quadruple, wind to triple in a decade.
- Renewables aim to cut coal's electricity share to 49% by 2035.
- Non-fossil fuel capacity to reach 786 GW by 2035-36.

India is set to dramatically expand its renewable energy infrastructure over the coming decade, significantly reducing its dependence on coal. Solar power capacity is anticipated to quadruple, while wind energy capacity is projected to triple.
This ambitious growth plan, detailed in the National Generation Adequacy Plan, aims to decrease coal's contribution to electricity generation to 49% by 2035-36, down from the current over 70%. Non-fossil fuel sources are expected to constitute a substantial 786 gigawatts of the total capacity by that period.
The plan also forecasts significant increases in nuclear and hydropower. Nuclear capacity is predicted to triple to 22 GW, and large hydro electricity capacity is expected to rise by 50% to 77 GW. Additionally, India plans a massive 13-fold increase in pumped storage hydropower to 94 GW and an exponential rise in battery storage to 80 GW from a minimal 0.27 GW today.
