Summary
- New consulting subsidiary proposed for NPCIL to guide private companies.
- The unit will offer design, engineering, and regulatory support for PHWR units.
- This initiative supports India's goal of 100 GW nuclear capacity by 2047.

The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) has put forth a proposal for a new consulting subsidiary under the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL). This entity aims to provide essential guidance to private companies venturing into India's burgeoning nuclear energy landscape.
The subsidiary, fully owned by NPCIL, will offer comprehensive services including design and engineering, operational and management assistance, and regulatory support. It will specifically focus on assisting private players looking to establish pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) units, a technology predominantly operated in India by NPCIL.
This development is a direct consequence of the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act, promulgated last year, which opened nuclear generation to the private sector. India has set an ambitious goal of reaching 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, with NPCIL targeting 54 GW of this capacity.
As NPCIL is the sole entity in India with extensive nuclear power generation expertise, it has become a point of contact for private businesses seeking technical advice. The proposed consulting unit seeks to formalize and streamline this support, facilitating private investment and contributing to national clean energy objectives.
