India's rapeseed-mustard crop is set for a strong performance in the 2025-26 season, with production estimated at 119.4 lakh tonnes, marking a 3.64% increase from the previous year. The cultivated area has expanded to 93.91 lakh hectares. This output boost is driven by a slight rise in yield to 1,271 kg per hectare, supported by favorable weather and improved farming techniques.
Rajasthan remains the top mustard-producing state, with an estimated output of 53.9 lakh tonnes. Uttar Pradesh and Haryana also show increased production, while Madhya Pradesh has seen a slight decline. The Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) highlights this growth as a testament to improved practices and policy support, crucial for enhancing domestic edible oil supplies and reducing import dependence.
While the overall outlook is positive, unseasonal rainfall in March 2026 caused localized losses, particularly in Assam. Despite these regional variations, the robust crop estimates reinforce India's oilseed availability. The SEA's estimates are provisional and will be finalized after further field surveys.
