LPG Crisis Sparks Electric Cooking Boom
11 Mar
Summary
- Electric cooking appliance sales surge tenfold on quick commerce.
- Major e-commerce platforms see massive jumps in appliance orders.
- Consumers face higher electricity costs for gas alternatives.

Commercial LPG supply disruptions across numerous Indian cities have fueled an unprecedented surge in demand for electric cooking appliances, with induction cooktops experiencing a ten-fold increase in sales on quick commerce platforms. Major e-commerce marketplaces like Amazon and Flipkart have also reported significant order jumps, with Flipkart noting a quadrupling of sales volumes over the past week. This trend extends beyond cooktops to other electric kitchen items such as kettles and air fryers, as consumers actively seek alternatives to gas-based cooking.
Electronics retailers are observing a similar pattern, with stores experiencing a sharp rise in customer footfall and many induction cooktop stocks depleted. Some retailers anticipate future shortages if demand persists at the current pace. While the shift to electric cooking offers an immediate solution to LPG scarcity, it introduces new considerations. Households may need to purchase compatible cookware, and higher electricity consumption could lead to increased monthly bills, ranging from an estimated ₹600 to ₹1,200 depending on usage and tariff slabs. Despite these additional costs, consumers are currently prioritizing immediate cooking needs over potential long-term expenses.
