India's March Industrial Growth Slows to 5-Month Low
29 Apr
Summary
- India's industrial output grew 4.1% in March, the slowest in five months.
- Factory output and electricity generation showed weaker growth rates.
- Capital goods output saw a significant increase of 14.6%.

India's industrial production registered a growth of 4.1% in March, reaching its slowest expansion in five months. This deceleration was primarily attributed to a cooling in factory output and a dip in electricity generation.
Manufacturing sector output increased by 4.3% year-on-year in March, a decrease from the previous month's revised growth of 5.9%. Electricity generation saw a more pronounced slowdown, rising by only 0.8% compared to 2.3% in February. Mining activity, however, showed robust growth, increasing by 5.5%.
Consumer durables output grew 5.3% and non-durables by 1.1%. A significant highlight was the capital goods output, which surged by 14.6%, suggesting strong investment in industrial machinery and equipment. For the fiscal year April-March, industrial output grew 4.1%, a slight improvement from 4% in the prior year.
This economic data emerges as India, the world's third-largest crude importer, navigates concerns stemming from the Middle East conflict, which began following strikes on February 28, potentially impacting energy supplies.
