India's Energy Outlook: Stable Supplies Amidst Global Tensions
8 Jun
Summary
- India anticipates lower fuel costs due to stable supplies despite US-Israeli conflict.
- Nation maintains 76-80 days of oil and gas reserves for energy security.
- New E85 ethanol fuel launched, offering a cheaper, cleaner alternative.

India anticipates a decrease in petroleum and gas costs in the near future, with abundant supplies expected to remain stable despite international conflicts. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri indicated that gas imports from Mozambique are set to increase, contributing to India's diversified energy strategy.
The nation currently holds sufficient oil and gas reserves to sustain operations for 76 to 80 days, ensuring domestic energy security. This robust inventory provides a buffer even against potential disruptions like a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Furthermore, India has launched its E85 ethanol-gasoline blend, which contains 85% ethanol and is priced 20 rupees per litre less than the existing E20 mix. This move is expected to significantly boost ethanol demand and reduce dependence on electric vehicles by offering a more accessible, cleaner fuel alternative.
While short-term energy shocks can be managed, Minister Puri cautioned that an extended, multi-month global conflict could lead to severe economic repercussions. The successful rollout of E85, supported by India's substantial ethanol production capacity, aims to reduce crude oil import requirements and benefit the agricultural sector.
