India Builds First Gas Storage Amid West Asia Tensions

India is initiating the development of its first strategic natural gas storage system, a move prompted by recent conflicts in West Asia. Public sector oil companies are currently evaluating various storage technologies, including underground salt caverns and above-ground cryogenic LNG tanks.

This endeavor represents a critical enhancement of India's energy security strategy. While the nation maintains strategic crude oil reserves, expertise in salt cavern gas storage is being developed. Feasibility studies are underway to determine suitable technologies and geological formations for this purpose.

The urgency stems from concerns about India's susceptibility to disruptions in LNG and LPG supplies, as the Middle East is a primary source for these fuels. Committees within the Petroleum Ministry are assessing storage solutions for LNG and LPG, alongside broader government groups examining trade and supply chain resilience.

Discussions are focusing on optimal storage volumes for the next four to five years, balancing strategic needs with commercial opportunities. The timeline for these new facilities has likely been accelerated due to the rebuilding efforts in affected regions like Qatar's Ras Laffan facility.
