Indo-Russian Rifles Private Ltd (IRRPL) in Amethi has successfully test-fired its inaugural AK-203 assault rifle, a significant achievement in the weapon's indigenisation for the Indian Army. CEO Maj Gen Sudhir Kumar Sharma confirmed that every component and input material for the prototype was sourced from Indian industries, representing end-to-end indigenisation.
The first fully indigenous rifle has passed firing tests, showing encouraging results. IRRPL is now focused on producing enough fully indigenised prototypes to hand over to the Army for trials in September 2026. The company is also working to boost manufacturing capacity to produce one AK-203 every 100 seconds.
Sharma indicated that enhanced capacity, indigenisation, and production optimisation could allow IRRPL to advance the delivery schedule for about six lakh rifles to the Indian Army by a year. Lt Gen (retd) Satish Dua praised the achievement but highlighted the project's lengthy timeline, emphasizing the need for compressed processes.
