The Census unfolds in two distinct phases. The initial phase focuses on gathering comprehensive housing details, including materials, amenities, and ownership. Citizens will have the option to self-enumerate digitally via an official portal before the enumerator's visit, receiving a unique ID upon completion.
The second phase involves Population Enumeration, which will electronically capture individual data, including caste information for the first time. The reference date for the Census is March 1, 2027, with the housing phase running from April to September 2026. This national exercise, backed by a budget of Rs 11,718.24 crore, is designed to inform future policymaking and development plans.
