India's Defense Deepens: From Platforms to Parts

India's defense manufacturing sector is evolving, moving beyond major platforms to focus on critical raw materials, components, and subsystems. The Ministry of Defence's sixth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) underscores this shift, featuring 405 items with an estimated domestic business opportunity of Rs 3,100 crore. This list prioritizes line-replaceable units, sub-systems, and components, signaling a deeper integration into the defense supply chain.

The Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020 has facilitated this transformation, increasing domestic procurement to over 70% and boosting defense production significantly. While previous lists focused on large platforms, the latest targets thousands of subsystems and components, expanding opportunities for a wider range of manufacturers. Defense electronics, particularly radar and communication systems, constitute about 56% of the list, with companies like Bharat Electronics Ltd and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd as major beneficiaries.

Aerospace components also form a significant part, covering helicopters and fighter jets, including older aircraft like the Su-30MKI. This indicates a strategy to create opportunities across both new platforms and existing fleets. The indigenisation drive is expected to create a larger component market, especially as India anticipates substantial defense procurement approvals in the coming years. This deeper localization push also presents opportunities for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through various government initiatives.
