India's Arms Exports Soar: Rs 38,424 Crore Milestone

India's defence exports have surged to a record Rs 38,424 crore (approximately €3.6 billion), signaling a significant leap in its global defence market presence. Concurrently, domestic defence production has climbed to nearly Rs 1.78 lakh crore (approximately Rs 17 billion), showcasing robust growth in the sector.

The government is actively promoting increased domestic missile and drone manufacturing. This involves transferring technologies developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to approximately 17 major private and public sector entities. This initiative aims to bolster the nation's self-reliance in defence production.

To foster innovation among defence startups, a new procurement framework guarantees five years of orders for successful prototypes. This policy aims to bridge the gap between initial development and large-scale commercial manufacturing, with contracts valued around Rs 2,000 crore already generated. This strategy supports the expansion of India's defence industrial base beyond traditional government-owned companies.

The procurement policy now prioritizes Indigenous Design, Development, and Manufacturing (IDDM) to achieve technological sovereignty. The government intends to spend 75% of its annual defence capital expenditure, estimated at $20-25 billion, domestically. Furthermore, India is developing its own artificial intelligence layer for the armed forces, collaborating with private industry partners to ensure capabilities are built within the country.
