Commercial vehicle (CV) sales in India saw a significant uptick, with a more than 30% year-on-year increase reported for the September 2026 quarter. This growth occurred despite ongoing Middle East conflict and a broadly deficient monsoon season across several Indian states. Major manufacturers like Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland posted impressive sales figures, with Tata Motors achieving 42.7% growth and Ashok Leyland close behind at 31.7%.
The positive trend was supported by robust demand from core sectors such as infrastructure, construction, and mining, as well as from the e-commerce and FMCG industries. A crucial factor contributing to this resilience was the reduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on commercial vehicles to 18% from 28%, effective September 22, 2025. This policy intervention, alongside government measures to stimulate economic activity, helped buffer the sector against macro-economic challenges.
However, CV manufacturers are facing margin pressures due to rising input costs, particularly for steel and copper. Both Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland reported a decline in operating profit margins in the preceding quarter. To counter this, manufacturers implemented price hikes in the second quarter of FY27 and again from October 1, 2026. Tata Motors is also pursuing a significant merger with Iveco Group, aiming for a global footprint with substantial revenues.
Despite these challenges, the overall outlook for the commercial vehicle segment remains positive. The growth trajectory is expected to continue, supported by government policies and sustained local demand. Investors are closely monitoring the sector's ability to maintain profitability amidst rising costs and global uncertainties. Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland's robust performance and expansion plans signal confidence in their future prospects.
