23 Apr
Summary
- India's app market revenue hit $300M+ in Q1, up 33% year-over-year.
- Non-gaming apps drove growth, with utilities, AI, and streaming leading.
- Global platforms like Google One and ChatGPT capture significant spending.

India's mobile app market has achieved record revenue, with first-quarter in-app purchases surpassing $300 million, a 33% rise from the previous year. Non-gaming apps fueled this expansion, contributing over $200 million, an increase of 44% year-over-year, driven by utilities, video streaming, and generative AI categories. This growth trajectory is consistent with broader market trends, where annual in-app purchase revenue is projected to reach $1.25 billion this year.
Despite a stabilization in annual downloads around 25 billion, user engagement deepens, indicated by increased time spent on apps and a greater willingness to pay for digital services. However, much of the spending in the first quarter was captured by international platforms, including Google One, Facebook, ChatGPT, and YouTube. Domestic apps like JioHotstar and SonyLIV performed strongly within video streaming.
While India's app market shows maturing download trends, monetization is strengthening due to increased usage and embedded digital payment habits. Although revenue per download remains low compared to other regions, newer categories like generative AI and short drama platforms are showing rapid growth. Generative AI apps saw a 69% year-over-year increase in downloads, with ChatGPT leading, while short drama platforms experienced over 400% download growth, signaling early monetization potential.
