India Opens 16th Commercial Coal Auction
17 Sep
Summary
- 25 coal blocks offered in nine states during the 16th auction round.
- Six previously awarded mines are now proceeding with development agreements.
- The auctions aim to boost investment and job creation in coal regions.

The Indian government has initiated its 16th round of commercial coal mine auctions, making 25 coal blocks available across nine states. This move is part of a broader strategy to increase private sector involvement in coal mining.
In parallel, six mines previously awarded in earlier auctions have signed Coal Mine Development and Production Agreements. These sites, including Tara (Revised) and Margo East, represent substantial reserves and production capacity.
These six operational mines are projected to generate significant annual revenue and attract considerable capital investment. They are also expected to create approximately 16,000 jobs within coal-producing areas.
The current auction round features 21 fully explored and four partially explored coal blocks. This commercial coal mining framework supports both established companies and new participants, offering 100% foreign direct investment and removing end-use restrictions.
Since opening to commercial mining in 2020, India has now conducted 16 auction rounds, offering a total of 147 coal mines. This program anticipates substantial revenue and investment across key coal-bearing states.
