Indian Markets Surge: IT & Reliance Lead Rally
21 Oct
Summary
- Sensex and Nifty saw significant gains in early trade.
- IT stocks, Reliance, and positive global cues boosted sentiment.
- DIIs provided support with net purchases of Rs 3,201.19 crore.

Indian equity benchmarks, Sensex and Nifty, witnessed a significant rally of up to 1 per cent in early trade on Wednesday. This rebound followed sharp losses from the previous session, primarily propelled by strong buying interest in IT stocks and the robust performance of Reliance Industries. Positive global cues further bolstered investor sentiment.
The 30-share BSE Sensex surged by 822.64 points, or 1.11 per cent, to reach 74,675.54 in morning trade. Concurrently, the 50-share NSE Nifty advanced 217.65 points, or 0.95 per cent, settling at 23,106.60. Key gainers among Sensex constituents included Infosys, which rose over 3 per cent, followed by Tata Consultancy Services and UltraTech Cement. Other prominent gainers were Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank, and Bharti Airtel.
Market sentiment was positively influenced by expectations of a strong Q2 results season and firm global market trends. Despite mixed performance in Asian markets, with South Korea's Kospi and Japan's Nikkei showing gains while Hong Kong and Shanghai indices declined, US markets closed largely higher. Brent crude also saw an increase, rising 1.46 per cent to $110.38 per barrel. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 1,148.64 crore, but this was substantially offset by Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) who were net buyers with Rs 3,201.19 crore worth of shares.
Geojit Investments Ltd's Chief Investment Strategist, V K Vijayakumar, noted that the market action is likely to be stock-specific and results-sensitive going forward, especially with the IPO of Jio Platforms attracting significant investor interest. Sachin Gupta from Choice Broking Pvt Ltd highlighted that while FIIs were net sellers, DIIs provided crucial support, making it a stock-picker's market. Traders are advised to remain selective, with global cues and Q2 earnings influencing intraday movements.
