Home Buying Surges as Top Indian Goal
25 Aug
Summary
- Home ownership is the top financial goal for 31% of lower-middle-class Indians.
- Women show a stronger home-buying aspiration than men in a recent survey.
- Financial confidence and savings scores significantly improved for Indians.

Home ownership has emerged as the leading financial aspiration for 31% of lower-middle-class Indians, marking an 8% increase from the previous year. This goal is growing faster than any other tracked by the recent "The Great Indian Wallet 2026" survey.
Women respondents expressed a particularly strong desire for homeownership, with 40% listing it as a key priority, significantly higher than the 29% of male respondents. This indicates a notable gender gap in home-buying ambitions.
Overall financial confidence among Indians has seen a substantial improvement. The Financial Well-Being Index rose to 40 in 2026, up from 34 in 2025, reaching its highest point since its inception. This growth is attributed to significant increases in savings and investment scores.
Managing both regular and unexpected household expenses appears to be easing for many consumers. A majority reported finding it less stressful to handle monthly bills and unexpected costs, contributing to a greater sense of security.
While homeownership leads, other significant five-year goals include starting or expanding a business (25%), saving for children's education (14%), and repaying loans (10%). Interest in discretionary purchases like two-wheelers and international travel has reportedly declined.
Access to affordable credit and digital financial services is increasingly viewed as crucial for achieving financial goals. Many respondents now see planned credit and EMIs as a viable method for funding major purchases, with 62% expressing increased comfort in using them.
