Indian car manufacturers are experiencing a significant resurgence, with their collective market share in the passenger vehicle segment reaching a five-year peak of nearly 27% in FY26. This marks a substantial increase from 18% in FY22, underscoring a shift in competitive dynamics. Local players like Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra have been particularly successful.
Mahindra & Mahindra saw its market share nearly double to 13.4% in FY26 from 6.8% in FY22, while Tata Motors climbed to 13% from 11.3% in the same period. Both are now vying for the second position behind market leader Maruti Suzuki.
In contrast, foreign automakers have faced challenges. Hyundai Motor India's market share fell to 12.3% in FY26 from 16.3% in FY22, resulting in the loss of its second position for the first time in 25 years. European brands also saw their combined share decline to 4.3% in FY26.
Analysts attribute the success of Indian companies to their agile strategies, quick responses to market demands, especially for SUVs, and a steady pipeline of new models and electric vehicles. This approach has allowed them to effectively tap into evolving consumer preferences.
