Foreign Deposits Fuel Lending, Rate Hikes Loom
10 Sep
Summary
- Foreign currency deposits may temporarily boost bank lending growth.
- Interest rate differentials suggest domestic rates will rise soon.
- Axis Bank plans AI integration for enhanced customer service.
Recent inflows of foreign currency deposits are projected to provide a temporary boost to bank lending growth. Axis Bank CEO Amitabh Chaudhry noted that while credit expansion is currently around 18-19%, it may moderate as the economy absorbs excess liquidity. He anticipates this growth trend to settle between 15% to 16% for the full year.
Chaudhry also highlighted concerns over the narrowing interest rate differential between India and the US, indicating that domestic interest rates may need to increase in the near future, possibly in October or December. He believes this widening gap necessitates greater consolidation within the Indian banking sector.
He advocates for larger banks to emerge through consolidation, emphasizing the need for scale to effectively deploy technologies like artificial intelligence. Axis Bank is actively experimenting with AI for personalized customer services, aiming to integrate this fully within the next four quarters to maintain competitiveness.
