Summary
- Four-wheeler companies saw buoyant demand in June 2026 quarter.
- Rising input costs like steel and copper pressure operating margins.
- Tata's JLR operations faced significant headwinds, impacting revenue.

The Indian automotive sector experienced a significant boom in the June 2026 quarter, with major four-wheeler companies reporting buoyant domestic sales. This surge was fueled by strong consumer demand for electric vehicles and SUVs, alongside the successful launch of new models. Companies like Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles all benefited from this trend, as families increasingly sought personal transport.
However, the industry faces margin pressures due to escalating input costs for raw materials such as steel and copper. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles' UK-based Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR) operations, which constitute 80% of its consolidated revenue, encountered several operational challenges. These included disruptions from a supplier fire and the Middle East crisis, leading to a decline in JLR's retail sales and revenue.
Despite JLR's struggles, Tata Motors' domestic operations showed resilience with a 46.2% year-on-year sales volume growth, particularly in electric models. Maruti Suzuki saw a 29.3% rise in total vehicle sales, boosted by a new plant and government GST reductions on SUVs. Mahindra & Mahindra reported a 15% increase in SUV sales and an 18% rise in tractor sales.
Maruti Suzuki India's revenue grew 35.9% to Rs 52,455.7 crore, though its operating profit margin narrowed due to increased material costs. Mahindra & Mahindra's revenue rose 23% to Rs 41,919.7 crore, with a similar impact on margins but a net profit growth aided by a lower tax burden. Hyundai Motor India's total sales saw a slight dip, with exports falling, and its net profit declined by 34%.
Looking ahead, automotive companies are implementing price hikes to offset rising input costs. Investors are closely monitoring JLR's operational recovery and the success of upcoming electric model launches, such as the Range Rover Electric and Hyundai Creta Electric, to ensure sustained growth in the domestic market amidst ongoing global uncertainties.
