India Wheat Output Stable Despite Weather Woes
26 Apr
Summary
- Wheat production for 2025-26 remains stable amid adverse weather.
- Industry forecasts are lower than government estimates, creating a gap.
- Farmers' resilience and adaptive measures are key to stable output.

India's wheat production for the 2025-26 crop year is demonstrating stability and resilience, according to the agriculture ministry. This is in spite of localized damage caused by unseasonal rainfall and hailstorms. The ministry describes the season as 'mixed but resilient,' attributing the outcome to both climatic challenges and farmers' adaptive strategies.
While the Roller Flour Millers' Federation of India (RFFI) projected an output of 110.65 million tonnes, the agriculture ministry's pre-weather estimate stood at 120.21 million tonnes. Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra suggested the actual figure would fall between these two estimates. Key factors supporting the stable production include an increased sowing area of 33.4 million hectares and early, timely sowing that helped the crop avoid severe heat stress.
Furthermore, a higher varietal replacement rate has accelerated the adoption of high-yielding, climate-resilient seed varieties. This, combined with low weed infestation, is expected to compensate for weather-related losses. Procurement data from states like Haryana and Madhya Pradesh indicates healthy on-ground production, with Madhya Pradesh even revising its procurement target upward.
