India Waives Nuclear Duty Retrospectively
22 Jun
Summary
- Customs duties on nuclear power generation imports waived.
- Waiver applies to imports from April 1, 2019, to January 31, 2026.
- Government extends previous customs duty exemption for nuclear power equipment.
India's finance ministry has announced a significant move to support its nuclear power sector. A government order issued on June 11, 2026, waived all customs duties on goods imported for nuclear power generation. This crucial exemption is set to be in effect retroactively, covering imports made from April 1, 2019, all the way through January 31, 2026.
This action builds upon a previous budgetary decision. Earlier this year, in February 2026, the Indian government had already extended an existing customs duty exemption for nuclear power equipment. That exemption was slated to last until 2035. The latest order ensures this benefit is now applied retrospectively, providing immediate financial relief for ongoing and future projects.
