India Faces Sweet Crisis: Sugar Prices Jump 40%
26 Aug
Summary
- Retailers are limiting sugar purchases to 3-5 kg per customer.
- Retail sugar prices have surged by approximately 40% in two months.
- Manufacturers plan to increase prices by at least 5% due to rising costs.

Retailers and quick-commerce platforms, including D-Mart, BigBasket, Blinkit, and Swiggy Instamart, have begun limiting sugar purchases. This measure is being implemented due to tightening supplies ahead of India's peak festive season.
Retail sugar prices have experienced a significant surge, rising approximately 40% over the past two months. This price hike is attributed to an unanticipated fall in sugar production below initial estimates, coupled with exports and alleged hoarding by some trade intermediaries.
To manage the situation, India has permitted the import of one million tonnes of sugar. However, manufacturers are preparing to raise prices by at least 5% to 6%, with further increases anticipated if sugar prices remain elevated. Some retailers are capping purchases at 3 kg to 5 kg per customer.
