Indian Markets Flat Amidst Crude Oil Jitters
10 Aug
Summary
- Indian indices closed flat on Monday due to rising crude prices.
- Softer US jobs data offered some optimism, countered by Middle East concerns.
- Titan Company and Tata Consumer were top gainers, while SBI was a major loser.

On Monday, August 10, Indian equity benchmark indices concluded the trading session with minimal changes. Rising crude oil prices and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East created a cautious trading environment.
These factors counteracted the optimism generated by softer-than-expected US jobs data, which had previously hinted at a potentially less restrictive monetary policy from the Federal Reserve.
The Nifty50 experienced a slight increase of 0.05%, closing at 24,583.80 points. Similarly, the BSE Sensex registered a modest gain of 0.06%, settling at 78,542.44 points.
Broader market segments exhibited mixed performance. The Nifty Midcap100 index saw a gain of 0.62%, but the Nifty Smallcap100 index declined by 0.27%.
Sectoral performance was also varied. The Nifty Realty index was a strong performer, surging by 1.35%. Other sectors like IT, Media, Private Bank, and Financial Services also closed in positive territory. Conversely, Bank Nifty, Pharma, Auto, FMCG, and PSU Bank indices ended the day with losses.
Technically, the Nifty50 traded within a narrow range of 24,500 to 24,620, suggesting a lack of strong directional momentum. Analysts noted that the 24,500 support level remained intact, preventing a significant downturn. The immediate resistance was identified in the 24,600-24,700 zone, with a breakout above 24,700 potentially paving the way for a move towards 24,800.
Conversely, a decisive breach below the 24,500 support level could lead to increased selling pressure, targeting the 24,400-24,300 region. Momentum indicators remained constructive but showed signs of moderating. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) hovered around 60, indicating positive momentum without significant acceleration, while the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) stayed above its signal line, with a positive histogram supporting the overall trend.
