10 Oct
Summary
- India and Singapore are discussing a 2,000 MW cross-border power interconnection.
- The link aims to facilitate electricity trade and enhance regional energy security.
- This initiative aligns with Singapore's goal of importing low-carbon electricity.

India and Singapore are in discussions to establish a significant 2,000 MW cross-border power interconnection. This ambitious project aims to create a robust link between Imphal and Singapore, potentially passing through Myanmar, Thailand, and Malaysia.
The proposed interconnection is designed to foster reliable electricity trade between nations. It is expected to bolster clean energy integration and enhance overall regional energy security. Singapore has set a target to import approximately 6 GW of low-carbon electricity by 2035.
This development was announced by India's Minister of State for Power, Shripad Yesso Naik, during the 20th East Asia Summit Energy Ministers' Meeting. He emphasized cooperation under the ASEAN-India Plan of Action 2026-2030, which focuses on regional power grids, transmission, and multilateral electricity trade.
India also extended an offer to share its extensive experience in renewable energy deployment, grid integration, and green hydrogen technology. The initiative aligns with India's broader 'One Sun One World One Grid' (OSOWOG) vision for a global renewable energy grid.
Furthermore, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka are seeking a consultant for a regional transmission master plan. This plan will focus on strengthening cross-border electricity trade and developing a regional power market.
