Rural India's Comeback: UBS Picks Top Stocks
10 Aug
Summary
- Rural households in FY27 have stronger finances after two good crop years.
- Government support and new rural employment schemes bolster income.
- UBS prefers auto, NBFC, and FMCG stocks for rural recovery theme.

Rural households in India are entering Fiscal Year 2026-27 (FY27) with strengthened financial positions, attributed to two consecutive strong crop years. This improved economic standing, combined with government support initiatives, positions the rural sector for a significant recovery.
UBS identifies companies in the automotive, non-bank finance (NBFC), and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sectors as prime beneficiaries of this burgeoning rural demand. They have selected specific companies within these segments as preferred picks to capitalize on the projected upswing.
Government interventions, including substantial cash transfer schemes and continued investment in rural infrastructure, are anticipated to sustain rural income levels. The newly implemented VB-GRAM-G rural employment scheme, replacing MGNREGA, is also expected to provide an additional economic buffer, although its macroeconomic impact is yet to be fully assessed.
Despite potential weather-related risks and rising food prices impacting purchasing power, UBS anticipates that rural demand will remain more resilient than in previous challenging periods. The ongoing recovery is seen as broad-based, supported by farm income, wage growth, government transfers, and improved credit access.
