India's Rates Jump: More Hikes on Horizon
14 Oct
Summary
- RBI raised rates for the first time in nearly four years.
- Borrowing costs at treasury bill auction reached a four-year high.
- Investors anticipate further aggressive monetary policy tightening.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has initiated its first interest rate increase in nearly four years, signaling a shift towards more aggressive monetary policy. Governor Sanjay Malhotra emphasized the inseparable link between monetary policy and financial stability, leading investors to rapidly increase their bets on further rate hikes.
This hawkish stance has driven up India's ultra-short-term borrowing costs. Treasury bill auctions saw cutoff yields for 182-day and 364-day bills reach 6.29% and 6.49% respectively, their highest in approximately 18 months. The premium over the benchmark repo rate climbed to levels not seen since November 2022.
Analysts suggest that resilient economic growth and elevated inflation expectations are contributing factors. Some foresee another 50 basis points of rate hikes within the current fiscal year, with potential for further increases if oil prices and inflation pressures persist, possibly extending into FY28.
