India has achieved a landmark in intellectual property with patent filings soaring to over 1.43 lakh in the fiscal year 2025-26. This represents a substantial 30.2% increase compared to the previous fiscal year. The nation is now the world's sixth-largest patent filer, underscoring its growing innovation landscape.
Domestic innovation is a key driver, with more than 69% of patents filed within India. Prominent contributions came from innovators in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, highlighting a robust "Invented in India" movement. This surge in filings has been on an upward trend since 2016-17, when filings were recorded at 45,444.
The government's concerted efforts to strengthen the patent ecosystem have been instrumental. Measures include reduced fees for startups and educational institutions, expedited examination processes, and pro bono services for startups. These initiatives aim to foster innovation across various sectors, ensuring that only genuine and quality patents are granted following rigorous examination procedures.
